1. Oakland City Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan repeated a rumor to the L.A. Times that celebrity Montel Williams wants to grow cannabis in Oakland. "He has wanted for years to open up a facility where he could produce really high-end medical cannabis extracts," she said, explaining that Williams heard through the grapevine that Oakland was the place to do it. "I would love to have Montel Williams here running a business." Williams could not be reached for comment. The L.A. Times also reported that the DEA has requested a copy of Oakland's ordinance. More news after the jump.

2. The San Francisco Police Department will discuss medical marijuana enforcement this week, after closing down seventy illicit grow houses in the last year, the Examiner reports. Police will present the “SFPD Medicinal Marijuana Policy” to the Police Commission Wednesday, August 4, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

3. Arizona police tried to sell 500 pounds of pot for $250,000 in a botched drug sting. Shots rang out and one detective was killed while two other officers were injured, the Arizona Republic reports.

4. The journal Molecular Cancer reports that the active ingredients in pot fight breast cancer in mouse trials. They reduced tumor growth, tumor number and amount of lung metastases in a mouse model of a certain cancer. The type of breast cancer is very aggressive and does not respond well to standard therapies. Researchers concluded that "these results provide a strong preclinical evidence for the use of cannabinoid-based therapies for the management of ErbB2-positive breast cancer." [via IACM]

5. The journal Emergency Medicine reports a startling incident in San Diego where a fourteen-month-old ingested cannabis resin, or hash, and went into a two-day coma. “Researchers of the University of California in San Diego, USA ... concluded that cannabis 'is capable of causing prolonged symptoms (including coma) in children.' 6. And on a lighter note, Stones Throw Records posts the new MADLIB MEDICINE SHOW #8: ADVANCED JAZZ is available for pre-order with an estimated release date of August 24.

Madlib has always called himself a DJ first, producer second, with jazz music as his first love and inspiration. With that in mind you might say this is what he does best.

The title card of Madlib Medicine Show No. 8 reads: Imagine an 80-minute music history course talking place in a dusty, hazy studio with wall-to-wall jazz vinyl - records from the past 40 years — jazz, fusion, funky, obscure. This course will not be graded. There will be no lecture. Madlib’s at the turntable. Class is now in session.

The front & back cover is the painting Jazzcats Crossing the Hudson (info). CD contains an 8-page booklet.
