It sounds like a setup for a romantic comedy, at least until the drugs and the dead monkey come out: Just before New Year’s in 1995, five friends with a long and gnarled history of screwing up together and just plain screwing together drive up to Tahoe to celebrate the past and usher in the future. But when two of the main characters get into a car accident that ends up threatening one of their lives — and, yes, results in a very strange trip involving a dead monkey hanging from a car dashboard — the book reaches a sort of heightened reality, aided by Foy’s lyrical, hyper-evocative prose, in which everyone is forced to own up to their mistakes and face the consequences. Made to Break doesn’t officially come out for a couple weeks, but hear Foy discuss it — his debut novel — with fellow author Christian Kiefer at Books Inc. Alameda (1344 Park Ave., Alameda).
