Cut Copy

Free Your Mind

Cut Copy has been making joyous, memorable, sunny dance-rock anthems for the past decade. The members of the Aussie synth-pop group have never been much for subtlety: Some of their best songs have titles such as "Lights and Music," "Need You Now," and "Saturdays." But that's the essence and beauty of Cut Copy — it's all about creating an uncomplicated great time.

Thematically, the band's fourth album, Free Your Mind, isn't much of a departure from its earlier material. In fact, Free Your Mind might ooze more cheese than ever. You've gotta reach the sky if you want your life to shine, goes the title track. But musically, it's full-on acid house. Channeling the Summer of Love, Cut Copy has never sounded so utterly, psychedelically blissed out: Lead singer Dan Whitford's voice shimmies in and out of each track amid groovy bongos, soul samples, weird bird-like noises, and a ceaselessly pounding beat.

Lyrically, Free Your Mind oozes more cheese than ever. You've gotta reach the sky if you want your life to shine, goes the title track. Over and over again, Cut Copy is telling us to stop thinking, chill out, and lose ourselves in love. The band has used the word "euphoria" to describe Free Your Mind in numerous interviews, and it's an apt descriptor, because all fifty minutes of the album are filled with dizzyingly spaced-out dance music. For some, that might seem tiring. But if you want to be consumed by the desire to dance, "We Are Explorers," which pulses giddily with classic house piano melodies and laser sound effects, and the thumper "Meet Me in the House of Love," will promptly accomplish the job.
