Re: “Oakland Council Okays Municipal ID Plan

I sincerely think the previous comments are poorly written, incredibly racist and a mischaracterization of many immigrant communities -- particularly the Latino immigrant community.

If researched one can clearly see and economic benefits and contributions of the immigrant community. For example, harvard conducted a study on immigrants' (documented and undocumented) contribution to the nation's tax revenue. The study found that immigrants contribute vast quantities on monies through taxes-
Immigrants do indeed file and pay taxes. In addition, most of the tax returns from undocumented immigrants are not and cannot be claimed this these large quantities are held by the US governent and can be used to help uphold social security for many baby boomers as they head towards retirement.
I think municipal IDs are a pragmatic approach to a very complex issue that deals with current domestic policy and years of international policy. Municipal governments are taking route that will allow cities to know who resides and works there. Furthermore, with federal measures like REAL ID, municipal cards won't serve as an ID to get a drivers lic., state ID or passport- in merely serve as a way to veryfy age and that they reside within that municipality.
