Re: “Separate and Unequal at Berkeley's Small Schools

This story completely misrepresents the situation, and especially misrepresents the related article that appeared in the Berkeley High Jacket. Did anyone do any fact checking before this was published? Come on, you can uphold higher standards than this. The sensational premise that the small schools are making worse the problem that they are trying to solve is totally unsubstantiated in the article. And I'm particularly offended by the reference to CAS lead teacher Phil Halpern "carping" that teachers at Berkeley High should have the courage to talk to each other as colleagues before slamming each other publicly in the media. It seems to me, from the Jacket article, that Halpern took the high ground, refusing to say anything bad about Ms. Hansen. And by the way, the Jacket article quotes Ms. Hansen as saying that all the kids at Berkeley High are under-prepared for her classes, she just doesn't like it that the small school kids have higher GPAs. Does Ms. Hansen truly think that all the kids at BHS are defective? And is she really arguing that all those kids deserve to have their grades lowered more than they deserve to have her teaching elevated?
