Crys Matthews

When: Wed., Feb. 13, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $8-$10
Crys Matthews blends folk, Americana, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and funk with a clear-eyes-full-heart-can’t-lose sincerity. The Washington, D.C., singer-songwriter isn’t afraid to tackle social justice issues in her songs but also leaves room for earnest love songs in her oeuvre — in August 2017, she simultaneously released political-tinged EP Battle Hymn For An Army of Lovers and love song-filled full-length album The Imagineers. She is reminiscent of Toshi Reagon, Tracy Chapman, and Ruthie Foster, yet her sound is uniquely her own. Matthews’ inspiration for her thoughtful, emotional lyricism comes from both driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains and the heartbreaking love story of Richard and Mildred Loving. Accompanying her at the Ivy Room is Dillbilly, a gender non-conforming Americana roots singer-songwriter raised in the rural Midwest and now based in Oakland.
