Joe Berlinger’s documentary is an environmental horror story with a sense of grim justice. What happened in 2006 when Chevron spilled millions of gallons of oil into the ground and water supply of a large area of the Ecuadorean Amazon? Cancer and dead wildlife. Chevron denied everything, but the natives fought back with a class action lawsuit (30,000 plaintiffs), and Berlinger and crew were there to record the events from Quito to Houston. The oil company’s Ecuadorean lawyer resembles a villainous Teutonic knight from an Eisenstein film. Another sharply pointed doc from Berlinger (Brother’s Keeper) (105 min.).
