It’s Berkeley’s biggest restaurant, and you’ve probably never heard of it. Its fare spans the world. Its portions are limitless. Occupying UC Berkeley’s first certified-green building, Crossroads is the university’s largest student dining facility, but nonstudents can also eat here for a nominal fee. An all-organic salad bar and ever-present cold-cereal bar augment a wide selection of hot choices at every meal; a typical Friday-night dinner included salmon, boeuf bourguignon, “blackened” tofu steaks, spelt salad, thick-crust pizza, curried corn, egg noodles, ziti-with-feta, grilled Reuben sandwiches, and brown rice. Vegan and vegetarian items are denoted with special signs. Drink stations offer milk, sodas, coffees, and teas; a frozen-yogurt dispenser flanks a case filled with freshly made desserts, many of them vegan. Don’t you dare call this “institutional food.”
