Crosspulse presents Just Be Thankful

When: Sat., Nov. 24, 8 p.m. 2007
Price: $20 suggested donation

A disciple of Odetta and Dinah Washington, San Francisco-born singer and musicologist Linda Tillery is well-versed in German harmonic structure, though she knows that roots, folk, and spiritual music is where you'll find all the really happening stuff. As director of the Cultural Heritage Choir, Tillery incorporates work songs and field hollers with gospel and blues influences, representing the panoply that is the African-American experience. She'll perform Saturday, Nov. 24 with Keith Terry & Crosspulse, an ensemble that blends trombone, drums, and "body music," which ratchets up the human beatbox idea to the next level of physicality (think: ululating, grunting, polyrhythmic hand-clapping, and maybe someone verbalizing the sound of a muted trumpet). Called Just Be Thankful, the show will also feature Tacuma King's S'Douae Youth Drum and Dance Ensemble. It starts at 8 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Oakland, and costs $10-$20.
