Crooked Still

When: Thu., Dec. 18, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $20.50, $21.50

Crooked Still dazzled the old-time music world with a combination of rock energy, mountain soul, and a rhythm-based approach that makes the groove foremost in its arrangements. Lead singer Aoife O'Donovan's crystalline vocals, the unique five-string banjo style of Gregory Liszt, Corey DiMario's jazzy bass, Tristan Clarridge's driving cello, and the fiddling of Brittany Haas deliver plenty of punch, reinventing folk music while still staying true to its deep emotional roots. With their classical, traditional, and Americana influences, they're expanding the vocabulary of traditional music, but what you notice in-person is the passionate fire they bring to their playing and singing. On Thursday, Dec. 18 at the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $20.50, $21.50. TheFreight.org
