Jeff Bridges gives a signature career performance as Bad Blake, a graying, fizzling country music singer-songwriter intent on drinking himself into the ground on a nowhere tour of Southwestern bars and bowling alleys. To the rescue comes Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a single mother with a few miles on her, as well; and Tommy Sweet, Bad’s one-time protégé, now a rising country star (Colin Farrell). Can the old hoss turn himself around? The well worn screenplay, adapted by director Scott Cooper from Thomas Cobb’s novel, evaporates like spilled bourbon when Bridges launches into one of his songs – they were written by T-Bone Burnett with Stephen Bruton and Ryan Bingham, and Bridges sings them with drunken authority. He grabs hold of the character of Bad (purportedly based on Kris Kristofferson) and shakes it like a rag doll. Also with Robert Duvall and Paul Herman (111 min.).
