Cradle Of Filth

When: Wed., Feb. 9, 8 p.m. 2011
As a subgenre, black metal has turned into a popular target for derision by both non-metal heads (see the recent "Nephicide" video by the band Jogger) and even hard-core metal fans. Though once revered for its shocking social commentary and aesthetics (the sonic and visual equivalent of "fuck you"), BM became somewhat static, and modern-day adherents turned it into a parody of itself by clinging to the familiar tropes of corpse paint, satanic references, posing with weapons, etc. Which is one reason why Nachtmystium has drawn such polarizing sentiments. Having eschewed its traditional BM roots, the Chicago band delved into cleaner production, electronic tinkering, some Pink Floyd-inspired epicness, and even new wave starting with 2008's Assassins: Black Meddle, Part I and continuing with last year's Addicts: Black Meddle, Part II. While some cried foul, non-BM purists viewed the albums as a blast of much-needed air. Now, BM experimentation is almost a given. The band will make a rare West Coast appearance on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the Regency Ballroom (1290 Sutter St., San Francisco) as part of the Creatures from the Black Abyss Tour, with Cradle of Filth, Turisas, and Daniel Lioneye. 8 p.m., $25, $27.
