Cradle of Filth

When: Tue., Feb. 10, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $25-$27

Oslo, Norway's Satyricon may not be the highest-octane black metal band you've ever heard, but in many ways the group is more adventurous for its refusal to conform to any formula. On its latest, The Age of Nero, mid-tempo songs like "Black Crow on a Tombstone" and "The Wolfpack," with its liquid-groove, looping guitar riff, trade brute force for hooks that are just as powerful. Speed demons will still relish the furious blast beats on "Die by My Hand" and strobe-like double-bass-drum pounding on opener "Commando," courtesy of drummer Frost. So what if singer Satyr's sinister, enunciated lyrics are a little straightforward? The result is a thoroughly rewarding album. Satyricon plays the Grand Ballroom at the RegencyCenter (1290 Sutter St., San Francisco), opening for Cradle of Filth, on Tuesday, Feb. 10. 8 p.m., $27.
