Even though David Lowery has spent the past few years predominantly working with Camper Van Beethoven and its musical mash-up of country-psychedelia, Balkan ska, and Tex-Mex, he returns to work with unheralded guitar slinger Johnny Hickman in the more mainstream environs of Cracker. That said, there is a strain of quirkiness in Cracker that's manifested itself on its ninth studio album Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey, a meeting place for late-Seventies-era California punk swagger and No Depression-flavored Americana gilded by guests Adam Duritz, John Doe, and Patterson Hood. Given the homecoming nature of this show, (Lowery and Camper met up a little further south in Santa Cruz), Cracker has been known to dip into the canons of Bay Area faves the Flamin' Groovies and the Grateful Dead during their live sets. Cracker and CVB founding member/opening act Victor Krummenacher will be raising the roof on Friday, July 10,at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $20-$22.
