In the '80s, alternative rock didn't get any quirkier or sardonic than Camper Van Beethoven, whose smorgasbord approach to music found them tossing disparate genres like ska, country, punk, and noise-rock into a centrifuge that spat out nuggets like "ZZ Top Goes to Egypt," "Take the Skinheads Bowling," and "Joe Stalin's Cadillac." Even though the '90s found CVB splitting into the Monks of Doom and Cracker camps, both sides reconciled with the '99 compilation Camper Van Beethoven Is Dead: Long Live Camper Van Beethoven. Since then, the quintet has fished out Tusk, a note-for-note cover of the legendary Fleetwood Mac album and New Roman Times, a concept album featuring its usual mash-up of country-psychedelia, Balkan ska, and Tex-Mex. This year has been all about celebrating the band's 25th anniversary, and unlike last year's pair of CVB/Cracker shows at the Independent, this will be a more plugged-in effort with some punk edge thrown into the mix. David Lowery and his crew will be bringing the snark on Saturday, Dec. 27 at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $23. TheIndependentSF.com
