Re: “Rush Hour Protest Today to Back Hunger Strikers at Pelican Bay

The inmates at Pelican Bay SHU and many other prisons (1 out of 3 California prisons have participants) are protesting their torturous living conditions in solitary confinement. They have 5 very simple demands, many of which consist of basic human rights such as natural sunlight and adequate healthcare. The article states that the SHU confines inmates for "up to 22 hours at a time," but neglects to mention that prisoners are locked up 22 out of 24 hours a day for many years, sometimes decades.

No mainstream media will adequately cover this historic strike, despite the growing numbers. From the beginning, the strike united prisoners across racial lines, but the CDCR won't say that either, because that threatens the image CDCR has worked so hard to build for Pelican Bay, that it houses the most violent gang members, the "worst of the worst." Many in SHU are labeled as a gang member because they have a tattoo.
