A financial master-of-the-universe type gets his comeuppance. Novelist Don DeLillo, aided and abetted by screenwriter-director David Cronenberg, doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t know about the death wishes of vain, amoral characters like Wall Street financier Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson), except that he really, really wants to get a haircut in that little neighborhood barber shop and will endure all sorts of danger and inconvenience — in his stretch limo with driver and bodyguards — to have it. Despite interesting bits by Paul Giamatti and Mathieu Amalric as urban flotsam, Eric’s journey to self-realization is a bit of a bore, and we never find out conclusively if teen heartthrob Pattinson, star of the Twilight movies, can act. But he doesn’t embarrass himself, either. With a supporting cast like Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel, and Kevin Durand, we expected major Cronenberg. Didn’t happen (109 min.)
