Drama, War
Ralph Fiennes winningly unveils his new career as an actor-director with this thrilling update of the Shakespeare tragedy, now imagined as a contemporary drama of civil unrest, martial law, terrorism, and despotism in a fantasy Rome, complete with newsreel-style combat video footage and a full roster of intense, meaty performances. Winner of the actors’ sweepstakes is probably Vanessa Redgrave, devouring all comers as the ambitious mother of bloody warrior General Martius Coriolanus (Fiennes) — but Gerard Butler, Fiennes himself, and especially Brian Cox also strut and fret to maximum effect. Director Fiennes makes good use of the distressed locations of Serbia, Montenegro, and the UK, as well. Fine screenplay adaptation by John Logan (Hugo, Rango). (122 min.)
