In the last decade or so, metal bands have increasingly incorporated hardcore into their sound, a hybridization that spawned the metalcore genre. One of the major forebears is Converge, a band that was influenced by Black Flag as much as it was Slayer. In its two-decade-plus existence, the Salem, Massachusetts band's output has been creatively prolific, pushing the boundaries of rhythm, heaviness, and technicality. One can hear its influence in everything from modern-day metalcore to prog-ish bands like Mastodon. (Not to mention that guitarist Kurt Ballou is also a highly sought-after producer and engineer who's worked with dozens of bands, including, locally, High on Fire and Black Cobra.) The band's latest, All We Love We Leave Behind -- which is streaming for free on YouTube -- is another jarring example of its heady music, a sonic assault that puts it light-years ahead of its followers. The band stops by Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) with Torche, Nails, and Kvelertak on Friday, Oct. 26. 8 p.m., $18.
