After running his San Francisco fine-dining restaurant Chiaroscuro for 10 years, chef Alessandro Campitelli decided it was time to serve his community in Oakland. He launched Contrasto, a more casual restaurant focused on the cuisine of his native Rome, Italy. Every week, he creates a new four-course, $55 tasting menu that’s meant to be shared family-style. The pastas are divine, but other dishes underwhelm. The service and ambience don’t quite match the price tag, either. Brunch, however, is more affordable and it includes Campitelli’s signature carbonara. It’s a simple but perfect version of the often-butchered classic.

Hours: Thu.–Fri. 5:30–10 p.m.; Sat. 11 a.m.–3 p.m., 5:30–10 p.m.; Sun. 11 a.m.–3 p.m., 5:30–9 p.m.
