Action, Thriller
New Orleans resident Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) is a retired smuggler now trying to live the straight life, but because of a relative’s bad debt he’s forced to make the proverbial “one last run” — to Panama, for cocaine and counterfeit currency — or else hammy hood Giovanni Ribisi will kill Chris’ wife (Kate Beckinsale). What keeps this from being the nifty little actioner it might have been? The writing mostly, especially the dialogue and some preposterous situations. But we have to give credit to director Baltasar Kormákur, an import from Iceland, for his welcome use of realistic merchant marine and construction-site settings. And the Jackson Pollock gag is fairly brilliant. The screenplay is a rewrite by Aaron Guzikowski of the Icelandic film Reykjavik-Rotterdam. Costarring Ben Foster and Diego Luna as various lowlifes and J.K. Simmons as the flummoxed captain of the container ship. (110 min.)
