Drama, Thriller
A thinking person’s disaster movie. The large cast of quality actors – Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Jennifer Ehle, John Hawkes, Marion Cotillard, Elliott Gould – gets put through its anxious paces when a fearsome new mega-virus called MEV-1 breaks out and threatens to kill one out of twelve people worldwide. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns wisely don’t waste much time with unnecessary dramatics as the virus gobbles up the population and anarchy comes to Middle American streets. Best of all, the science is sound. And the politics – CDC, Homeland Security, whistle-blowing bloggers – is as dirty as we have a right to expect. Recommended. (108 min.)
