Some might say this comedy about addictive consumerism seems a tad out of touch considering how the economy tanked before it was released, but it’s difficult to believe there was ever a gilded period in world history that could have accommodated storytelling that so wantonly celebrates frivolous credit abandon and $200 scarves. Isla Fisher plays Rebecca Bloomwood, the titular shopaholic and journalist who, despite her skyrocketing debt, ironically gets a job at Successful Saving magazine. Laughs try to ensue, but mostly it’s just demeaning to women who have now been reduced by pop culture to trend-obsessed imbeciles whose inability to resist their emotional impulses makes them largely responsible for the current financial crisis.
