How and why is San Francisco turning into a tech-happy, high-priced wonderland for venture capitalists and their employees? Berkeley-based documentarians Deborah Kaufman and Alan Snitow (Secrets of Silicon Valley) quickly analyze the question and then point to a possible solution in this perceptive look at one particular political campaign. They take their cameras to SF’s Chinatown to witness the 2015 City Supervisor election contest between business-backed incumbent Julie Christensen and progressive stalwart Aaron Peskin (known in Chinese as “the Bearded Man”). Along the way, we meet an opinionated cast of characters including reporter Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez, Peskin aide Jeffrey Kwong, Mayor Ed Lee, Mission District politico David Campos, and historian David Talbot – all of whom have a vital stake in the city’s Topic A. Kaufman and Snitow’s endlessly informative fly-on-the-wall doc may be the finest documentary of its kind (77 min).
