This neighborhood restaurant in Oakland’s Laurel district was created with the idea that young families and busy professionals — and anyone else too busy to cook — can swing by for a meal, or to pick up a few side dishes or a main course to supplement their dinner at home. While the food won’t win prizes for originality, there is a homeyness and honesty to it that’s very appealing. The menu changes weekly, but staples include a rotating selection of soul-warming soups and a classic mac ’n’ cheese that’s baked until its edges and breadcrumb topping are irresistibly caramelized and crunchy. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a deli case, which contains a variety of salads and other takeout items (meatloaf, “restuffed” baked potatoes, and so forth). Don’t miss the flaky-crusted chicken potpie — sold frozen, it’s the perfect thing to stash away for a rainy day.
