Comedy, Fantasy
Anyone for a therapeutic kaiju flick built around Anne Hathaway? A young alcoholic with a guilty secret (Hathaway) returns, dazed and confused, to her little hometown and picks up where she left off with her equally guilt-ridden childhood friend (Jason Sudeikis). Their therapy, however, takes the form of a pair of Godzilla-style giant monsters wrecking downtown Seoul, Korea. Huh? Spanish move-over filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo has a lot of explaining to do about all this. The characters and screenplay should ideally handle that task. They don’t. This laborious allegorical stunt-mobile will do nothing for the careers of anyone involved. Written and directed by Vigalondo (110 min., 2016, rated R) (K.V.)
