Duarte Batista

Born in the Azores, moved to the East Bay in 1966. Secretary and treasurer for the Unio Portuguesa do Estado da California. Batista is an active member of San Leandro's Portuguese community.

Joseph A. Freitas Library and Museum (1120 E. 14th St., San Leandro). "Houses the largest collection -- over ten thousand volumes -- of books and materials dealing with Portuguese history and culture in the United States."

Root Park (Hays & E. 14th sts., San Leandro). "Beautiful marble statue dedicated to the spirit of the Portuguese immigrant."

Lusa Coffee (1310 S. California Blvd., Walnut Creek). "This coffee house specializes in Portuguese flavors and desserts."

Holy Ghost Festivals and Parades. "The Holy Ghost Festival marks a Catholic celebration that proclaims the faith of the Portuguese and their devotion to the Holy Ghost, and is celebrated in many Portuguese halls."
