Odd concept: Dramatize the less interesting portion of French fashion designer Coco Chanel’s life, the years in which she invented short hair for women, mannish jackets, the little black dress, etc., while moping around as the kept woman of a rich sportsman. Further hampering things is the way actor Audrey Tautou characterizes Chanel: dour, overly industrious, humorless, with much class resentment at being a backstairs girl. There’s more sizzle in the last five minutes of director/co-writer Anne Fontaine’s moribund bio drama — a montage sequence of Chanel founding her fashion house and rising to fame — than there is in the preceding 100 minutes. For devoted Chanel surfers only (105 minutes).
