Re: “UC Berkeley Closes Door to State Students

You can't run the top rated University on wishes and rainbows, it takes cash. If the state won't fund UC then it needs to go else where for money. I don't see why you think this is unfair... it's basic economics: you can't have something for nothing.

Re: “Finally, a Decent John Yoo Protest

Yoo did something unpopular, something that many think was repugnant and reprehensible. Should UC revoke his tenure for doing something like that?

Let's look at a situation that is the mirror opposite. Not so long ago a few UC faculty joined with students in the Civil Rights movement. At first many white Americans hated what they were doing. The notion of equal rights for all Americans was unpopular and many even thought it was repugnant and reprehensible. But those faculty were protected by academic freedom to speak out. Eventually most of America joined that way of thinking and today only a few backwards racists still believe in segregation.

The thing about academic freedom and free speech is that you can't protect only the stuff you like. You have to protect it all or it becomes pointless. If UC fires Yoo today then it sets a precedent to fire anyone faculty who's research is unpopular. If that's the sort of academic environment you want then move to Saudi Arabia or North Korea.

I believe in Academic Freedom and Free Speech, even for jerks like Yoo.

Re: “UC Berkeley: John Yoo's Job is Safe

Oh grow up. If he broke the law then charge him with a crime. If he did not break the law then you can't fire someone just because you don't like what they say. We have laws for a reason and the idea that you'd punish someone who did not break the law but who you disagree with is just mob rule. If you hate Yoo then focus your efforts on having criminal charges filed against him (and Bush too). But until he's convicted of a crime, efforts to punish him in other ways are wrong.

Re: “Some Guy Climbs a Tree. Berkeley Indulges Him.

I think they should have said nothing and left him in the tree. While he was up in that one they could have cut down the other one. Then everyone goes home for the break but he stays up in the tree... cold and miserable. After the break the university comes back, says "um that tree is sick and could fall on someone" and they fille tresspassing charges on Idiot-Wolf. Then they go and ignore the issue... it's not holding up a construction project so he can sit there as long as he wants. If he comes down, they can then cut it. If it falls while he's in in then they let him take the liability for the damage to the tree and to anything/anyone it hits. The university needs to start out-thinking these people instead of letting them have control.
