On a purely visual level, this standard-brand, CGI-gorged remake of the 1981 Ray Harryhausen fantasy adventure of mortals, gods, and demi-gods scuffling in ancient Greece is worth watching – for the Medusa scene alone. Before and after that, expect disaster overkill and heaps of bad acting as Perseus (stolid Sam Worthington), petulant half-mortal son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), battles monsters and nature on his intrepid quest for something to stop the hideous Kraken from destroying Argos. We might want to send out our own search party for Travis Beacham, Phil Hay, and Matt Manfredi, the three Arrgghhh-o-nauts who wrote the screenplay for director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) – all they do is rearrange the furniture of the Desmond Davis/Harryhausen version and add lotsa scary critters. The dialogue may cause boils. Gemma Arterton’s Io is practically the only non-behemoth worth paying attention to, although Medusa (played by Natalia Vodianova), as always, brings home the bacon. Also with the incredibly hammy Ralph Fiennes as Hades and Alexa Davalos as Andromeda (118 min.).
