High-quality gastro-doc profiles Jonathan Gold, the Pulitzer-prize-winning culinary critic for the Los Angeles Times, as he trolls the strip malls and neighborhood mom ‘n’ pop restaurants, searching for the multi-culti soul of his hometown. A large part of the charm of filmmaker Laura Gabbert’s movie is the engaging personality of Gold himself, a roly-poly family man who obviously enjoys talking to people while digging into his favorite moles and porridges. As an admirer notes on camera, Gold is the antithesis of “contempt prior to investigation” — he investigates new cuisines and scenes every day with an anthropologist’s glee. And happily, we get to watch him (79 min.).
