“Family” doesn’t always have to mean “dumb.” Uncomplicated, pleasing sitcom has fun with a non-threatening Italian-American nuclear unit from the Bronx, led by Andy Garcia as a prison guard who yearns to be an actor. Garcia and Julianna Margulies are especially fine as battling spouses Vince and Joyce Rizzo, as are Emily Mortimer and Alan Arkin in small roles as Vince’s acting-class acquaintances from far-off Manhattan. Writer-director Raymond De Felitta knows the territory well, and the place-specific details add up: the daughter’s secret career as a stripper, the teenage son’s penchant for fat women, bored Joyce’s eyes for the young ex-con Vince brings home, etc. Filmmaker De Felitta (The Truth About My Folks) makes this style of frantic-but-relaxed comedy look easy. It isn’t (100 min.).
