When: Wed., June 13, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Thurber Prize for American Humor-winner, best-selling author, editor, and political satirist Christopher Buckley once worked as chief speechwriter for George H. W. Bush, which is perhaps where he draws inspiration for They Eat Puppies, Don't They? Purposefully offensive and amusing, his latest novel skewers US relations with China, with a bizarro plot wherein two lobbyists start a rumor that the Chinese secret service is trying to assassinate the Dali Lama, which in turn provokes a national crisis leading straight to the potential throwing down of arms. Buckley appears at the Hillside Club (2286 Cedar St., Berkeley) on Wednesday, June 13. 7:30 p.m.; $12 advance, $15 door, $6 students and members. 800-838-3006 or BrownPaperTickets.com
