Choreofund 2

When: Thu., June 5, 7-9 p.m. 2014
Price: $40
As a grassroots dance organization, Luna Dance Institute (605 Addison St., Berkeley) aims to support choreographers who operate on small budgets. So when the organizers noticed that many local dancers were spending more time on fundraising than on their creative pursuits, they decided to start a micro-funding event called Choreofund. At the first event, in December, seven choreographers presented their proposals to an audience of thirty people. In exchange for their $40 contribution, audience members got a behind-the-scenes look at the dancers’ work and then voted for which choreographer should receive the total $1,200, plus twelve hours of free rehearsal time at Luna (the runner-up got six hours of rehearsal time). The second event, which happens this Thursday, will feature LV Dance Collective, Shabnam Dance Company, Daria Kaufman, Claudine Naganuma, Jessica Barber, and Erica Pinigis. Each performer or group will show excerpts from their proposed projects and, in the spirit of paying it forward, the winning choreographer will participate in the next Choreofund event.
