Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Director Atom Egoyan, veteran chronicler of angst and anomie North of the Border, didn’t write this proto-pulpy, marital-triangular nail-biter – it was adapted by Erin Cressida Wilson from Anne Fontaine’s 2003 French film Nathalie – and there’s not much of what we recognize as Egoyan’s soul in its tale of a cheating husband (Liam Neeson), a hurt wife with a masochistic streak (Julianne Moore), and a prostitute (Amanda Seyfried) who exploits the situation all the way to its horror-film finale. Give Moore a gold star for her role as Catherine, an ob-gyn with serious self-doubt issues. Neeson’s horn-dog university prof David and Seyfried’s scheming succubus title character, however, are strictly from the melodrama file. Stuart (Re-Animator) Gordon should have directed it instead. Also with Max Thieriot as Catherine and David’s teenage son (96 min.).
