For their followup to Persepolis, filmmakers Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud combine live action with animated sequences for an interlocking series of dour miniature fables of everyday people, writ large and organized around the story of Nasser-Ali, an unfortunate violinist played Mathieu Amalric. There are a few writing problems, and the melancholy mood weighs heavily, but Amalric’s performance remains the film’s rallying point. And the image of Azraël, the Angel of Death (played by French actor Edouard Baer), is one that will haunt viewers long after they leave the theater. Costarring Maria de Medeiros, Jamel Debbouze, Chiara Mastroianni, Isabella Rossellini, and Golshifteh Farahani. The French-Belgian-German production is scripted by Satrapi and Paronnaud from Satrapi’s graphic novel (91 min.)
