Chicano Batman

Chicano Batman at the Fox Theater in Oakland

Formed in 2008, Los Angeles quartet Chicano Batman shares a lineage with old-school Latinx bands like Los Ángeles Negros and Los Pasteles Verdes, which were popular in the 1970s. Like those bands, Chicano Batman plays a style of ’70s psychedelic soul mixed with romantic pop ballads, and also incorporates elements of soul, surf, and Tropicália. Also like those bands, the quartet wears matching suits with ruffled shirts. The band’s lyrics speak of love, but also of propaganda, imperialism, conquest, and oppression. Bardo Martinez (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Eduardo Arenas (bass, guitar, vocals), Gabriel Villa (drums, vocals), and Carlos Arévalo (guitar) are currently on tour supporting their third album, Freedom Is Fire. After playing last year’s BottleRock festival in Napa, the band has amassed more fans in the Bay Area, and its growing popularity is evident by this week’s headlining gig at the Fox.
