Animation, Documentary
There were only eight (then seven) defendants in the trial of anti-war activists accused of rioting at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, but radical firebrand Jerry Rubin declared the two lawyers were also on trial, hence the title of this dramatic new style of documentary. Writer-director Brett (The Kid Stays in the Picture) Morgen’s imaginative use of period newsreel footage, plus re-created animated scenes from the blacked-out courtroom, demonstrate that things got pretty rough in the bad old days. The archival shots of protestors getting their heads bashed in by cops are still strong and vital, and voice talents Hank Azaria, Roy Scheider, Nick Nolte, and Liev Schreiber help bring the outrageous political show trial to life (100 min., 2007).
