Drama, Romance
When his wife dies, a conservative, sixtyish Bavarian man named Rudi (Elmar Wepper) makes a sentimental journey to Japan to visit their son, a preoccupied businessman. Once in Tokyo, widower Rudi finds peace, contentment, and an 18-year-old homeless performance artist named Yu (Aya Irizuki). No, it’s not that kind of movie. German writer-director Doris Dörrie (How to Cook Your Life, Enlightenment Guaranteed) handles this Teutonic combination of About Schmidt and Lost in Translation with just the right amount of distance. With Hannelore Elsner (127 min.).
