Adventure, Drama
Ultra-poetic, mucho exciting, crazy-realistic surf legend tells the true story of Santa Cruz big-wave phenom Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston), his mentor Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), and their years-long training regimen to get Jay ready for El Niño monster waves at the title beach. Quite simply, one of the very best surf movies. Fine-tuned performances by the principals plus Elisabeth Shue, Abigail Spencer, and Devin Crittenden, add maximum local color, and Kario Salem’s screenplay (from a story by Jim Meenaghan and Brandon Hooper) is completely believable to go with the naturalistic direction by veterans Michael Apted (the 7 Up series) and Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, L.A. Confidential). Worth seeing twice for the hair-raising real-life Mavericks footage (107 min.)
