Ultra-ironic Cold War laff-a-thon about an alcoholic, oversexed Texas Democrat congressman (Tom Hanks, clearly having fun) teaming up with a horny rightwing heiress (heavily wardrobed Julia Roberts) and an affable, black-sheep CIA agent (Philip Seymour, owner of the best lines) to get US government funding for the Afghan Mujahideen, battling Russian invaders in the 1980s. Who knew this would pave the way for the Taliban and Osama bin Laden? Doh. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (adapting George Crile’s book) and director Mike Nichols pitch this true story at a level just slightly higher than the average Three Stooges short, which is no doubt the point. Also with Ned Beatty as a senator and Om Puri as Pakistani strong man general Zia ul-Haq (97 min., 2007).
