Re: “Mid-Week Menu: Mamacitas Cafe Opens, Recreational Crab Season Postponed Six Months, and Kwik-Way Building Owners Negotiate with Dunkin Donuts

Hi my name is Charles Hahn and I represent my family, the owners of Kwik Way.
I was not approached by Luke Tsai or the East Bay Express regarding the proposal from Dunkin Doughnuts to lease the Kwik Way space, I just wanted to clarify that my family is exploring all our options. No lease has been executed as of yet. Our family has not ruled out a mixed use development that the neighborhood favors for the site. The biggest challenge we have is with Bank of America who has an antiquated lease that gives them a license for 30 parking spaces. We had a developer that was interested and provided the City with renderings, site plans and geo-techincal reports. Unfortunately they pulled out because of the parking arrangement with Bank of America. We would appreciate it if the neighbors could help us by writing letters to Bank of America, so we can provide a mixed use apartment complex with neighborhood serving retail. I found it very alarming on Twitter that Max Allstadt (Gonzoakland) made a racist stereotypical remark about "Korean Americans setting up wig shops in Oakland." He is a self proclaimed progressive and we found it very hurtful that someone so influential on social media would post such a hateful remark. I have the screen shots and I can forward it to you. Please be advised that I was a victim of a hate crime during our negotiations with McDonalds in 2004. Someone inked a racial slur on my door. Regardless, my family is open to all options and appreciates any feedback from the community.
