Chants of Sunshine

When: Thu., Nov. 5, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: free

Gravelly textures, throbbing pulses, and gently modulating tones creak out of the tiny built-in speakers of several portable cassette players scattered about the room. Gregg Kowalskyhasfilled these tapes with sounds of wispy field recordings, acoustic instruments, and analog electronics for his piece Tape Chants. He performs a live mix in concert, placing the cassette players in various locations surrounding and amid the audience. The melding sounds create a blissful drone colored by gritty tape warmth, and rich with nuance from the multi-speaker spatialization interplaying with room acoustics. The audience shares in the exploration as Kowalsky thoughtfully moves speakers, adjusts volume, and spends a lot of time listening. Interacting with Jacqueline Gordon's Our Best Machines Are Made of Sunshine, a four-channel surround-sound installation processing audio from microphones mounted in front of the gallery, Kowalsky will perform his piece at Queen's Nails Projects (3193 Mission St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Nov. 5, with Luuse & Fun Santa Maria. 8 p.m., free.
