Changing Climates: Class, Culture, and Politics in an Era of Global Warming

When: Fri., April 11, 7-9 p.m., Sat., April 12, 8:45 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Sun., April 13, 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. 2008
Price: $10-$35

In years past, the words "global warming" conjured images of a forlorn polar bear standing precariously on a shard of polar ice cap, drifting southward on a rapidly rising sea. But now we know that the ramifications of climate change are actually quite far-reaching and severe, from decreased agricultural yields and potential famine to a wider range for disease vectors. The 18th Annual California Studies Conference, titled "Changing Climates: Class, Culture, and Politics in an Era of Global Warming," (held Friday-Sunday, April 11-13), will hone in on such climate-change-related issues as immigration, community organizing in Silicon Valley, and working in a green economy. The event will feature panelists Rick Wartzman, David Bacon, and Sasha Abramsky, plus a keynote address from independent vice presidential candidate Matt Gonzales on Friday at 7 p.m. All events will take place at Berkeley City College (2050 Center St.). Suggested donation of $35, or $10 for students. 858-449-3092.
