Change the Speed Limit on the Bridge to 40 MPH

In the wake of yesterday's fatal accident, CalTrans plans to add new signs, warning motorists about the hazardous S-curve on the Bay Bridge, according to the Chron. The signs are a welcome addition, but the agency apparently is not planning to implement what could be a simple fix - lower the speed on the upper deck to 40 miles per hour.

That way, motorists won't be forced to slam on their brakes as they approach the curve. Although drivers may simply ignore the new speed limit, CalTrans could work with the CHP to step up enforcement on the span.
