A large, fluffy, overstuffed mattress of a costumed romance, courtesy novelist Colette and director Stephen Frears, who embalms Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of Colette’s tragic love story. We’re left with the Steel Magnolias version of a Belle Epoque French fashion show: a middle-aged Parisian courtesan (weary-looking Michelle Pfeiffer) consoles herself over her doomed affair with a young dandy (wan Rupert Friend) by trying on beaucoup de outfits and dodging the barbs of her friends, a coven of gossipy old whores overplayed by Kathy Bates, Harriet Walter, Anita Pallenberg, et al. Audiences may need smelling salts to revive themselves, or maybe just coffee to stay awake (100 min.).
