Now in a new location after 31 years in West Berkeley, Celia’s serves large portions of standard Mexican favorites amid an ebullient, engaging, colorful ambience. This is a venerable venue that stays true to itself, and thus true to a long-beloved but now obsolete type of dining experience: the restaurant that strives neither to scare nor dare you, neither to intimidate nor humiliate you. The clean, consummately comfortable, exuberantly adorned restaurant whose portion size, ounce by ounce, still outpaces its prices; whose servers don’t seem to hate you; and whose seating arrangements provide enough room to set down purse, jacket, and/or backpack and still spread out. In a sense, this is the original California cuisine.
