Dara Lynne Dahl

Dahl is the new editor and general manager of Spectator, the Emeryville-based weekly devoted to all things horny.

L'Amour Shoppes - Excellent one-stop smut shop[pes] throughout the East Bay. The Hayward and Fremont branches come especially well-recommended. (Multiple locations)

Good Vibrations - The place to go for high-quality sex toys, books, and videos ... as well as a not-to-miss schedule of classes and readings. (2504 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley. 510-841-8987)

Townhouse Bar and Grill - Great cocktails, cute bartenders, and excellent food, conveniently located within stumbling-home distance of Spectator's palatial offices. (5862 Doyle St., Emeryville. 510-652-6151)

Fine Arts Cinema - A classic example of the essential repertory theater. Alas, sadly nearing the end of this incarnation, but we're already looking forward to its next one (which we hope will feature better popcorn). (2451 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley. 510-848-1143)

East Bay Vivarium - The nation's largest selection of reptiles and amphibians, with a refreshingly caring and well-informed staff. (Warning: On weekends, also the cheapest "let's take the kids to see some animals and blow off some steam" destination.) (1827 5th St., Berkeley. 510-841-1400)

Michael Lerner

Michael Lerner is rabbi of Beyt Tikkun Synagogue in San Francisco, author of Spirit Matters: Global Healing and the Wisdom of the Soul, editor of Tikkun magazine (, and a Berkeley resident. He was recently arrested at the US State Department along with ex-Harvard professor Cornel West in a nonviolent protest against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

Seventh Heaven Body Awareness Center - Michael Ziegler creates a center of spiritual refreshment in the middle of Berkeley. (2820 7th St., Berkeley. 510-665-4300)

Ginger Island - The best of California cuisine and good vibes on 4th Street near Hearst. (1820 4th St., Berkeley. 510-644-0444)

Cesar Chavez Park - A magnificent place to reconnect to God while experiencing an unbelievably beautiful view of the Bay. (University Avenue at the Bay, Berkeley.)

The Juice Bar Collective - Great lunch, and still the place for ex-radicals and aging hippies to mix with the new young ones. (2114 Vine St., Berkeley. 510-548-8473)

Cody's Books - I love the Jewish book selections - certainly the best and smartest collection in the area - and the magazine selections. Still the preeminent book store in the United States, although I also love Black Oak and its array of evening readings. (2454 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley. 510-845-7852)

East Bay Tikkun Community - The voice of both Jews and non-Jews who know that Middle East peace and security for Israel will never be achieved without justice and security for the Palestinian people. Plus a powerful force for "a new bottom line" in American politics.
