Celebrating Elephants Day

When: Sat., May 24, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 2014
Price: $11.74-$15.75
Every day, 96 African elephants are killed for their tusks. To help raise awareness about this disturbing fact, the Oakland Zoo (9777 Golf Links Rd., Oakland) is hosting its 18th annual Celebrating Elephants event on Sunday. Visitors can find out how to tell the zoo’s four African elephants apart, learn about poaching and the illegal ivory trade, examine an eleven-pound elephant tooth, and watch an animal-free circus performance with acrobats and jugglers. The event also offers a once-a-year opportunity to tour the elephant barn, where you can see the animals up-close and watch an elephant “pedicure.” Funds from the tours will be donated to the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, an African elephant advocacy organization.
