Re: “Proposed Budget to Gut East-Asian Languages at Cal

As a Cal student, I find that maintaining the Ethnic Studies budget is an extremely high priority. For students who are native speakers it is a way for them to stay in touch with their cultural identity, which is easily lost growing up in America. For non-native speakers, it allows them to immerse themselves in a new experience. Simply because ethnic studies is not often connected to the "moneymaking" careers, does not mean that it does not make a for a fuller, more well-rounded, and enriching education. Manuel, I find it very offensive that you assume that Chinese Berkeley students are "likely going for business, computer science, and engineering." However, if you do in fact see business, computer science, and engineering as more important, you should keep in mind that these fields operate on an international level as well and that it is beneficial, to say the least, that students graduate knowing how to communicate abroad.
